There is always so much confusion around home based business start up but it does not have to be that way. Starting a home business is as easy or complicated as one wants to make it but most of the business online that work follow a simple yet effective plan. The only way to survive the competitive realm of the web is by obtaining traffic into a web site, from there you have to find a way to convert the traffic into sales or profit. That is why the best way to start a home business is by constructing a web site which is built on something that you know about and enjoy. This can be anything from a hobby to what you do as a career already.
Before actually going through the entire process of designing a web site and getting it online it is better to take a week or so and reflect on how the web site business will work. What theme will the site be covering and what sections will the site have. For traveling Alaska a web site can have a section of what to do in Alaska, where to stay in Alaska, where to eat in Alaska and tips for visiting Alaska. By knowing a lot about Alaska and having an interest in the subject the web site will be easy to create. The biggest goal for a webmaster is to create a site which supplies information on a general subject and turn the site into a resource for the Internet. This way all the traffic coming into the site will be looking for information on the subject and if the site delivers the information that they are looking for it becomes much easier to turn this traffic into profits, and have a lot of fun doing it.
Within each section of the site articles should be created to supply more information on the each sections topic. Where to stay in Alaska should be filled with page after pages of resources and recommendations about where to stay and why people should stay in these places. Reviews of hotels and accommodations can be made and links to these places that you recommend should send the visitors to more information on the advice with a place to make the purchase if they want.
This leads right into how to make money from the site. Each page of the web site should supply a way to make money, or multiple ways to make money from the targeted traffic coming into the page. For the example of “where to stay in Alaska” if this section then breaks down into topics of different areas to stay such as Anchorage, then the Anchorage page should have some links for hotels, bed and breakfasts and camping sites visitors can book for their vacation. The best way to make money from these links and recommendations is using affiliate programs which will pay a commission for anyone who makes a purchase coming from your web site. Once a visitor finds the information that they wanted and then decides that your recommendations were great, they may decide to book the accommodations from your site. By joining affiliate programs anyone who does book from your site will equal a commission made for the sale. This is a great home based business start up and it is what many successful online business do. Affiliate programs are available for every theme imaginable no matter how narrow the niche.
Hundreds of different products are sold through the business of network marketing (MLM or multi-level marketing). Companies selling soap, cosmetics, vitamins, nutritional supplements, energy drinks, long distance services, water filters, gold, and almost everything imaginable have long used MLM as their method of distribution. With the many disasters around the world and the bad economy causing havoc in peoples life, it is plain to see that emergency preparedness and food storage are worthy endeavors for everyone. Being prepared can cause a sense of well being and security if and when problems arise. One never knows when a tragedy will hit.
People who are interested in food storage and emergency preparedness or who want to find a home based business might consider this new endeavor in network marketing. There are good possibilities, and there is money to be made in this area.

All you have to do is put company ads on your website and you make money from people clicking on the ads. There are several sources that you can contact to make money from this, but Google Adsense is by far the most recognizable.
There is no question that it is much easier to get rich from internet marketing when you can invest money into your business from the start. However, this is not to say that you have no hope if you can’t invest any money in the beginning. Article writing is by far the most effective method to making money from a free home based business, but selling ad space and promoting affiliate programs have their advantages as well. As long as you have the determination and are willing to put in the effort, you can make it in internet marketing without spending a penny.
Applesauce? Really?
Rudys Fruity Applesauce, an endeavor that caters to gift basket stores and gourmet niche foods, almost never happened. In an odd way, we had to thank a tanking stock market for our success.
Several years ago I had been working at mutual fund investment firm and the stock market was doing its typical volatility thing (anyone remember Y2K?) and things were looking fairly bleak for the investment industry. The dot com boom had just busted and many investors were literally frozen with fear about trying to make any more decisions as to where or how to invest their funds. Many had great losses (albeit on paper) and were sitting deathly still.
Now, an applesauce business was nowhere on my radar, but, I had managed to save a little bit of cash and discussed with my wife the idea of doing some type of business for ourselves. With a high probability of a layoff looming in the not too distant future we decided to start looking around as well as brainstorm for ideas. It was the fall season and here in New Hampshire that means many things, but, one especially: apple picking.
Making Applesauce
One day I had gone to a local orchard and bought some apples, took them home, found my favorite applesauce recipe and started churning out my favorite food. I had cooked enough of it that I was giving some of it away to relatives and my sister-in-law, who LOVES our homemade applesauce, joking said that we ought to consider selling our applesauce to local gourmet stores.
It was one of those “Sweet Baby Jesus!” moments. Thank goodness we had never owned a business before that time!! We began a very arduous, but, ultimately, rewarding process of trying to establish a home based business. It took us to places and people we never thought wed ever go or meet. The research alone was brutal. Government licenses, cooking processes, jars, recipe trials and errors, creating a logo, marketing, safety procedures, sales, internet presence, etc. The list now seems HUGE looking back.
The Applesauce Name
But, we were successful! The name for our gourmet applesauce business, Rudys Fruity Applesauce, is a homage to my father-in-law who passed away while we were in the early stages of establishing the business. The flavors came about through extensive family food tastings to see which combinations of fruit worked with our apples.
Some of our greatest times have come from the many trade shows and product samplings at stores that weve been able to do around New England. Weve been honored with doing a tasting/presentation at an inauguration for one of New Hampshires governors, at the State House! That was a hoot AND we were named as The Best of New Hampshire by New Hampshire magazine a few years ago.
Weve seen folks use our gourmet applesauces in cookies, oatmeal, bread, with granola and warmed up served on ice cream! Applesauce is loaded with fiber and nutrition so ranks as a top health food.
Were still a small business. Weve had a few set-backs. But, weve revamped our website, taken a few more deep breaths and continue to march forward. Ya gotta love this country!!
Tomorrow I’ll write about trying different fruit combinations. Kiwi/Pear? Coconut? Who knows!
